The landscape around the hall is wild to say the least. Perched on the side of a valley in the North Pennines, bordered by bleak grouse moors.

 

This is uncompromising country, not suited to gardening, but here lies one of the treasures of the North of England.

 

All of the planting was bought in mature from nurseries in England and the Continent, providing us with a truly instant mature garden.
